The cavity was discovered accidentally during mining drilling work and was later used for the extraction of minerals (only two of the eight galleries are accessed on the guided tour). The miners called sopláos to the karstic cavities that they cut in their work and that created strong currents of air. 1 During its exploitation, many families in the area supported themselves with the income they obtained from this mining activity, combined with livestock. After decades of neglect, speleology , and specifically the "Speleo Club Cántabro", SCC, since 1975, 2 discovered its true geological value.
